Privacy Policy for Quips
Last updated: May 8, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how Quips ("we", "our", or "us") handles your information when you use the Quips iOS app and its iMessage extension (collectively, the "Service").
Information We Collect
When you use Quips, we may collect:
- Account Information: Email address, phone number (if you sign in via SMS), username, full name, profile photo, and password (stored securely via Firebase Authentication). If you sign in with Apple and choose "Hide My Email", we receive only Apple's relay address — never your real email.
- User Content: Sound recordings ("quips"), sound metadata (titles, tags, your custom artwork), and any content you upload or share through the app.
- Social Graph: Accounts you have blocked, accounts you have starred or favorited.
- Usage Data: Send counts, favorites, and basic interaction data to power features like trending sounds.
- Device Information: Standard iOS device identifiers used by Apple's frameworks for app functionality, plus Firebase push notification tokens if you opt in to notifications.
- Diagnostic Data: Crash reports and basic performance data via Firebase Crashlytics, scrubbed of personally identifiable information.
We do not collect location data, contacts, or browsing history.
How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Operate and maintain the app (account login, content storage, social features)
- Display sound effects you upload to other users you've connected with
- Improve app functionality and fix bugs
- Communicate important account or service updates
Sharing of Information
Your content (sounds you upload, profile info) is visible to other Quips users. We do not sell your data to third parties.
We use the following service providers:
- Firebase (Google) — for authentication, database (Firestore), file storage, and crash reporting. Their privacy policy: https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Apple — for iOS frameworks, including iMessage extension delivery
Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. You may delete your account at any time from within the app, which removes your profile, sounds, and associated data from our servers.
Children's Privacy
Quips is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Your Rights
You may:
- Update your profile information at any time within the app
- Delete your account and all associated data via the in-app settings
- Contact us with any privacy questions or requests
Security
We use Firebase's encryption-at-rest and encryption-in-transit for stored and transmitted data. While no system is 100% secure, we follow industry-standard practices to protect your information.
User-Generated Content & Reporting
Quips lets users upload audio clips ("quips") and view content uploaded by other users. We rely on our community to flag content that violates our policies.
- In-app reporting: Tap the menu (⋯) on any quip to report it for copyright, inappropriate content, hate speech, spam, or other reasons.
- Review window: Reports are reviewed within 24 hours. Quips that violate our rules are removed and the uploading account may be suspended or banned.
- Blocking: You can block any user from the same menu — their quips will no longer appear in your feed.
- Zero tolerance: We do not tolerate objectionable content, hate, harassment, or impersonation. Repeat offenders are permanently banned.
DMCA Safe Harbor (Copyright)
Quips complies with the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA"). If you believe content uploaded to Quips infringes your copyright, you may submit a takedown notice to our designated agent.
Submit a takedown notice to: dmca@quipsapp.net (or use the in-app Report → Copyright / DMCA option).
A valid notice must include:
- A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or authorized agent.
- Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed.
- Identification of the material to be removed (the quip title and a link or screenshot).
- Your contact information (email, phone, address).
- A statement of good-faith belief that the use is not authorized.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information is accurate and you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner.
Counter-notice: If your content was removed and you believe in good faith it was a mistake, you may submit a counter-notice to the same address with corresponding information per 17 U.S.C. § 512(g).
Repeat infringers: Accounts with multiple substantiated infringement claims will be permanently terminated.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted in the app and on this page with an updated date.
